Moving Day

“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.” Matthew 6:19-21 NLT

Boxes, closets, cabinets, and shelves fill our homes with stuff. We all have stuff. Stuff is things we use and treasure. Although many things are essential we are warned about how we cherish our stuff we gather in life. We just have to go through a move to realize the same things we once cherished and thought to be important were replaced with new and improved items or even discarded due to age or destruction. This is true for just about everything we own. Through some recent family moves I have been reminded of this very thing. Clothes, shoes, dishes, collections, art, technology, … (I can stop there) all fill our homes. The very things that once made us happy are discarded, replaced or destroyed.

Let me take just one area of my life- music. Movers actually broke my piano to a nonrepairable state. My cassette tape collection moved into an 8-track collection. Although not yet discarded the vinyl record collection has been replaced by boxes and boxes containing CDs that also are not even used today due to digital music. My original stereo system with all the light, knobs, buttons that I thought did it all was ultimately replaced to a Bluetooth portable device that delivers better sound quality than the system and big speakers ever did. I am sure you have stories of your own. Now they are boiled down to just memories on which to reflect.

Although it is fine to own worldly possessions we are warned about coveting and being so concerned with possessing things of this life that are short lived. When we try to acquire and want to possess the things of the earth our mind becomes consumed with pursuit. We might not even realize it but uses our resources of time, money, effort, and emotion to be so concerned with earthly treasures.

We are clearly instructed to build our life by storing treasures in heaven. Heaven is timeless; Christ is timeless. He is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. He has never changed and never will. He is ageless so we will never outgrow him. Our relationship with Him is what we should seek therefore; the joys of heaven and eternal life should be our life’s pursuit. By focusing on the heavenly treasures our heart will become full of joy. Our days will have a new mission. You will find rest in your day and ultimately will be less stressed. He will be your song. Best of all time, destruction, or thieves will not be able to take away the life you develop and grow strong.

“Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.” Today is moving day! As you move through life from day to day be focused on spending your resources of time, talents, finances, drive and emotion for His glory. You will find as you seek Him you will be blessed and refreshed. You will be given wisdom on how to continue to seek heavenly treasures. Invest in yourself and invest in others. Get ready to pack your box labeled “HEAVENLY TREASURE” to overflowing. It will be the only box that matters.
